The Confirmation preparation process is a journey in which the Candidate will explore different aspects of faith, church ministry and service. This process necessitates a full commitment from the Candidate, Parents/Guardians and Sponsor as this is a Sacrament that, by definition, calls for a time of reflection on personal faith and a more active participation in the life of the Church.
Sponsors
Candidates for Confirmation fittingly seek the spiritual help of a sponsor. The selection of a Sponsor for The Sacrament of Confirmation should be done with careful thought and consideration. Each candidate is asked to choose a practicing adult member of the Catholic community who will walk with you and help you to celebrate Confirmation. The sponsor represents the believing Catholic community and should be seen as a life-long role model and guide for the Candidate.
A practicing adult Catholic is one who is registered as a member of a parish and regularly attends Sunday Mass. The priest of the parish where the sponsor is registered is bound in conscience and in Canon Law to refuse to give a sponsor certification to anyone lacking these requirements. Sponsor certification is required of all who will be sponsors, including those who are registered members of St. Mary’s Parish. Please consider the above requirements before asking someone to serve in this capacity. If any clarifications are needed, please speak to a priest or call our office at (301) 577-8844 or send an email to [email protected]
